Death from the COVID‑19 virus is typically caused by acute respiratory failure and the pathophysiologic process known as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome or ARDS. This disease process is associated with an inflammatory response that ultimately leads to fluid within the lung’s alveoli leading to respiratory failure. A secondary clinical manifestation of ARDS is haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis which is a hyper-inflammatory syndrome characterized by a fulminant disease (tissue injury) and a fatal cytokine storm (hyper-cytokinemia) with multi-organ failure. In collaboration with ENCYT Technologies Inc., we have developed a novel treatment that will abrogate this fatal cytokine storm in COVID‑19 infected patients developing initial signs of respiratory distress.
