This proposed project is intended to build a UVC disinfection chamber and a handheld device to treat surfaces contaminated with coronavirus and other pathogens. It builds on existing promise of UV based disinfection and our research experience in designing and application of UV based treatment systems. In this project, effective UVC disinfection systems will be developed to help reduce the transmission of COVID‑19 and other diseases through surface routes. The outcome of this project will lead to development of a UVC disinfection chamber and a handheld UVC-LED disinfection unit which can be used to inactivate the virus on personal items such as keys, laptop as well as surfaces such as tabletops and handrails. The success of this project will lead to the development of commercial UV based disinfection units through partnership with Nemalux Industrial and other Canadian environmental and manufacturing companies.
