COVID-19 and Food Security in Urban China
Speakers: J Crush, Z Si
This presentation introduces the Hungry Cities Partnership and its SSHRC-funded COVID‑19 and Food Security in China Project, analysing the results of a pioneering household survey conducted during the lockdown in 2020 in two Chinese cities: Nanjing and Wuhan (the original epicentre of the global pandemic). There was a sharp increase in overall food insecurity but very different experiences and outcomes in the two cities. Given that the pandemic has led to major increases in food insecurity globally, the study shows how a resilient food system was put under strain and the coping responses of government, communities and citizens themselves.
