Ontario University of Windsor 2020 NSERC Alliance COVID-19 Grant

The vision of the proposed Alliance Grant is to ensure the health and safety of construction workers in pandemic situations. This research develops an implementation strategy for maintaining physical distance using a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-based optimized work schedule. Time-based simulation (i.e., 4D modeling) capability of BIM will be used in this research. The University of Windsor will lead an innovative research agenda equipped with state-of-the-art facilities in collaboration with the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) to achieve the objectives of this research. IHSA provides the resources and training that control and eliminate safety hazards in the construction industry and will be the most suitable organization to promote this research. Findings of this research will lead towards a safer construction site that adheres with public health guidelines. This research promotes using cutting-edge technology (i.e., BIM) for improving construction operations. Site managers can leverage the proposed scheduling technique and training material to enhance site productivity and safety, and avoid costly shutdowns during pandemics.
